Creating Career Pathways

Throughout the Mining and Minerals North West Region, we provide ongoing traineeships and apprenticeships in order to create career pathways and upskilling opportunities for people to work and grow their careers within the mining and resources industry.

With skills shortages being an ongoing issue across the sector, providing these types of opportunities is more important than ever, along with our continued focus on retaining trainees and apprentices while progressing their skills development.

Across our operating regions, we have introduced several initiatives which engage a variety of trainee and apprentice roles, from Boilermakers, Electricians and Mechanical Fitters to Plant Operators, Riggers, and Scaffolders.

One of these key initiatives is the Monadelphous’ Indigenous Pathways Program which has been running for over a year in partnership with Rio Tinto which aims to support Western Australian Indigenous people secure long-term, sustainable employment.

The program consists of working with different training organisations and covering associated costs to upskill our trainees and cadets. A dedicated team provides support and mentoring to selected participants along the way.

Operations Manager David Mangano said that our traineeships and apprenticeships were also focused on increasing diversity and inclusion within our workforce.

“We hope to continue to attract a diverse range of future trainees and apprentices within our regional communities for possible career pathways,” he said.

Meet some of our current apprentices, Jayden Reddy and Johaness Angeles who are gaining valuable hands-on experience within our teams.

Jayden Reddy

Jayden Reddy has been undertaking his electrical apprenticeship with Monadelphous since February 2020.  As well as developing his skills as an electrician and gaining valuable industry experience, Jayden said that it has been great to develop his communication skills.

“I love getting to meet different people, work with different customers and to have the chance to build relationships as well as my skills with on-site experience,” he said.

Jayden originally lived in Newman but is now FIFO and said that he is enjoying being part of the team.

“It is a great culture at Monadelphous, particularly the safety culture here – everyone really looks out for one another,” he said.

Jayden’s focus for the future is to continue to upskill and become more efficient in his work. Another goal he has his sights set on is to be able to travel for work.

“I would definitely encourage other people to seek out an apprenticeship as it opens doors to see the world and work anywhere in the mining and resources sector,” he said.

“Having an apprenticeship under your belt gives you unlimited opportunities.”

Johannes Angeles is working with our team in Port Hedland, while he completes his Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (Heavy/Welding).

He is undertaking a four-year apprenticeship which includes TAFE and on-site work experience.

Johannes said that he has thoroughly enjoyed the experience so far.

“It has been great to have the opportunity to learn a lot of new skills from different areas and different people,” he said.

“Working within a supportive team has given me more confidence in what I am doing and in being able to approach people for help.”

Johannes said that his career goal is to become a Boilermaker and to continue working on-site.

“I would also like to be able to further my career with future studies and work towards becoming a Supervisor,” he said.
