This year’s Winter Internship Program saw students gain practical, on-the-ground experience across a diverse range of project sites throughout Australia.

Kicking off in June, the five-week internship began with a full day at the Perth office. Interns heard from business leaders and recent graduates, took part in team-building activities and wrapped up the day by connecting with leaders and colleagues.

From there, it was straight into the field! They were placed across key project locations including Barrow Island, Roxby Downs, Prominent Hill and Gladstone. Each site offered a unique opportunity to apply what they’d learned in a real-world environment, contribute to active works, and gain firsthand experience across different disciplines.

Jasmine, who joined the EC Projects team at Prominent Hill, said the internship gave her valuable exposure to new areas of engineering.

“The internship has given me exposure to disciplines I knew very little about specifically piping, civil and electrical works,” Jasmine said.

“I can now read a piping and instrumentation diagram (PID), understand how cables are supported and know what a ChemSet is.”

Jasmine found the on-site support from the team made a big difference.

“Ezilna, the SMP project engineer I was partnered with took a lot of time out of her busy schedule to teach me anything from software to procurement to breaking down scope of works,” Jasmine said.

“Both engineers and superintendents gave me site walk-throughs explaining the project, current construction, any issues that had to be rectified and answering all the questions I had.

“Overall, the Prominent Hill team made a huge effort to ensure I had an enjoyable internship experience and felt more than welcome on site.”

She was also given meaningful responsibilities during her time on site.

“I was given real responsibilities and tasks such as procurement, technical queries and work packs which contributed to the engineering team’s execution. I found it gratifying to be able to assist the team whilst simultaneously learning and developing skills.”

Over in Gladstone, Shreya also embraced the opportunity to get practical, on-the-ground experience.

“I spent a lot of time in the field and developed a stronger understanding of on-site operations, technical problem-solving and how to apply engineering concepts in real-world scenarios,” Shreya said.

“The guidance and support from both leaders and graduates helped build my confidence and shaped the way I approach challenges.”

For Shreya, working with a supportive and professional team made the biggest impact on her experience.

“Working with such an incredible team made this whole experience enjoyable. It taught me that with the right support and a positive work environment, even the most complex projects can be tackled successfully,” she said.

When asked what advice they’d give to future interns, both Jasmine and Shreya shared similar insights.

“Talk to everyone,” Jasmine said.

“Whether they’re an engineer, rigger, or procurement officer everyone has a unique experience and insight to offer. I learnt a lot about the construction process from supervisors and tradespersons in the field which helped consolidate the things I’d learn from the engineering team.”

“Make the most of every opportunity,” Shreya added.

“Don’t hesitate to ask questions or explore outside of work too. I’d never been over east before, but after chatting with the team, I found out I could spend my RnR in Brisbane. I took the chance and had a fantastic week.”

As the internship wraps up, we’d like to thank all the interns for their efforts and enthusiasm, and the site teams for supporting their learning and growth throughout the program!
