Music, lived experience, and community connection took centre stage in Karratha as Monadelphous supported the International Day of People with Disability Pilbara 2025 celebration in December last year.
Hosted by the Pilbara Disability Network, the event brought together people with disabilities, families, community groups and employers to celebrate achievement, share lived experience and build connections.
Senior HSE Coordinator Jacinta Chamberlain attended as a presenter and stallholder through her work with Siblings Australia.
Her presentation drew on her personal experience growing up alongside her younger brother Declan, who lives with significant intellectual disability, autism and epilepsy, offering insight into the sibling experience and the importance of peer support.
“When you’re able to share those experiences with others who understand them, it creates connection, support and a sense of belonging,” Jacinta said.
The program also featured a book reading by young author Kooper, a speech by ParaMatildas goalkeeper Katelyn Smith, and an address by Melanie Chatfield, who shared her life of adventure while living with retinitis pigmentosa.
A standout moment of the day was a live performance by Karla, daughter of Monadelphous Senior Project Administrator Jo Anne, whose original music filled the Red Earth Arts Precinct.
Karla, who has a vision-impairment, performed two songs, including an original piece, earning a warm, enthusiastic response from the crowd. Monadelphous has previously supported Karla by sponsoring her travel to Perth for a braille music camp.
Sixteen stallholders took part, with sensory spaces available for attendees who needed a quieter environment.
The event ran from morning tea through to early afternoon, creating a welcoming and accessible atmosphere throughout the day.
