The Port Availability Improvement Project (PAIP) is a unique and very significant project delivered by a successful integration between our two operating divisions, Engineering Construction (EC) and Maintenance and Industrial Services (M&IS).

The project was focused on exactly what the name suggests – improving the availability of iron ore through BHP’s processing facilities in Port Hedland.

Under the BHP Asset Panel Framework Agreement that Monadelphous is a part of, the scope of work at the existing process facility included the installation of newly designed deflectors, new maintenance gates and belt tracking components to streamline ore flow.

M&IS Mining and Minerals North West Area Manager Dom Calderone said that the project is a great example of successful integration between M&IS and EC project teams to complete the work.

“This was a very important scope of work which we were able to work together on to deliver great results for the customer,” Dom said.

“The project team completed all 21 planned shutdowns over a two-year period on time without impact to operations.”

EC Project Manager Brent Jones said that operational discipline was fundamental to the project’s success, ensuring transparency, accountability and predictability across the workforce.

“The project team did an outstanding job of identifying works that could be completed out of shut,” Brent said.

“In total, over 750 scheduled duration hours were removed from in shut windows and re-sequenced to out of shut windows, significantly reducing the chances of negatively impacting Port operations.”

The completion of this project enables our customer to improve ore availability rates, which results in more iron ore being shipped out. The project team has shown that great commitment to providing quality outcomes across the business is unwavering while remaining strongly committed to ‘The Safe Way is the Only Way’.

This customer service reinforces Monadelphous’ strong reputation and helps to build on the long-standing relationships we have with our customers.

Well done to the teams for working together and successfully completing this major project.Monadelphous’ ore-some teamwork on Port Availability Improvement Project
