An open door for mental health

Over the last five years, James Stevenson has worked in different roles at Monadelphous after starting on the tools and working his way up the ranks to Rigging and Scaffolding Supervisor.

During his time as a Supervisor, James said he is most proud of the safe execution of all projects he’s been involved in.

“We all know how important safety is in our industry and, as a Supervisor, I need to ensure everyone in the team returns home safely,” he said.

“Being able to be involved in the complete planning process of a project in my role is something I really value because I can implement the learnings I’ve had over the years from being on the tools and make sure that a job is completed in the best possible way.”

James said that seeing projects through to completion in a safe manner is extremely important to him and this includes not only ensuring everyone is physically safe but mentally healthy too.

“I have an open-door policy for the team and want the team to know that I am always here to listen,” he said.

“I’ve lost too many friends over the years to mental illness, so it’s important that everyone knows that it’s okay to talk and have a chat.”

With his passion for promoting mental health, James recently spearheaded the R U OK Day event aboard the Northern Endeavour and encouraged everyone at the facility to start a conversation with their mates.

He actively sought out information, collaborated with onshore and offshore teams and arranged a prestart session for the facility to include all personnel and the wider team onboard in R U OK Day.

As a result, he was nominated for a Monos Moment and awarded for his commitment to safety, encompassing mental health and creating a safe space for everyone.

Away from work James said his reason for showing up each day is his wife and three young children who he loves spending time outdoors with.

“The kids are the reason I took this role as my roster allows me to spend more time,” he said.

“When I’m not with the kids, I try and get out to play a round of golf – after getting a hole-in-one about seven years ago, I’ve been trying to replicate that game since.

“I also used to do a fair bit of snowboarding, so I’d love to take the kids overseas and get them in the snow too.”

James said that his dream destination would be anywhere you can see the Northern Lights, for something unique.

Congratulations on the highly deserved Monos Moment, James.
