35 kilometres north-west of Tom Price in the Pilbara region of Western Australia is where you will find Rio Tinto’s Western Turner Syncline mine. At the start of 2020, Mondium commenced its scope of work on the Western Turner Syncline phase 2 (WTS2) project, which included engineering, procurement and construction work associated with the process plant, overland conveyer and non-process infrastructure.
The EC Projects, Heavy Lift and E&I teams played a considerable role in delivering the WTS2 project and did an excellent job in doing so. The team’s hard work, dedication and expertise contributed to the project’s successful delivery.
Check out the completed project in the below video:
WTS2 is an investment by Rio Tinto in their existing greater Tom Price operations to help sustain the production capacity of an existing world-class iron ore facility. The project facilitates the mining of existing and new deposits and includes construction of new crusher, as well as 13-kilometre conveyor.
Leveraging the combined strengths of both Lycopodium and Monadelphous, Mondium geared up for the task with over 700 personnel working on the project during its peak. Navigating a global pandemic mid-project was something no one could have possibly planned for, but the team proved they were able to adapt, delivering the project in an impressive timeframe.
Not only did they complete the project to a high-standard, but also the safe way (which everyone knows is the only way), achieving 2 million hours-worked lost time injury free.
During the project, Mondium, and their subcontractors, were awarded contractor of the quarter by their customer five times, which is a testament to the teamwork and dedication of the project team.
The facility achieved first ore in October 2021 – an excellent achievement for all involved!
