Leadership Updates
2 Minute Read

Welcome to the March edition of On the Hook.

I want to start by acknowledging and recognising the massive contribution that everyone across the Heavy Lift team has made in the first quarter of 2023 in the quality of delivery and commitment to safety. Together, we have achieved a strong start.

Some of the achievements across the business unit include:

  • The expertise demonstrated by the Port Hedland team in relocating locomotives at the Pilbara Ports Authority. The team did an excellent job and delivered for the customer ahead of schedule and with no safety incidents
  • Securing the Pluto 2 heavy haulage services scope is a significant win for Alevro, a landmark milestone for the joint venture, as well as for our business unit in positioning us for future project opportunities involving heavy haul and alternative lifting
  • The West Gate team have navigated some complex moves in Melbourne including a heritage building and street trees, lighting and bridge infrastructure, all while weathering four seasons in a day!
  • The Kings Valley FMG shut was successfully executed with zero incidents, 99% mobilisation rate and the delivery on schedule
  • The HL tendering, engineering and management team continue to work as an integrated team with the broader Engineering Construction (EC) division on multiple Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) scopes and tender activities over a large pipeline of projects across multiple commodity markets such as iron ore, lithium, battery metals and oil and gas
  • Through Alevro, we are also working on an ECI directly with a client on a major development project.  This enables early involvement and for our team to demonstrate value add at the project outset
  • The Heavy Lift team have been acknowledged and thanked for their expertise and contribution to the multiple shutdowns completed at South Flank in 2022 by EC projects demonstrating the advantage of an integrated Monadelphous team to BHP
  • A shout out to those team members that are pushing ahead with ideas generation and implementation and sharing them on Mprove.  Four ideas recently submitted from Heavy Lift are included in this newsletter – we will continue to share and recognise the team efforts to drive improvement
  • We came together to recognise International Women’s Day during our monthly team meeting and in various pre-start sessions throughout the business to discuss the importance of embracing diversity in the team. I would like to call out the many male allies in our team who continue to support their female teammates. It is particularly pleasing to see an increased number of females in the field supported by the crane services traineeship growing their skills and opportunities for the future

I recognise that all of these achievements do not come without the outstanding loyalty and dedication of the many people across our team.  It is the people in the business unit that will make ongoing achievements possible and I am committed to ensuring that our existing people have clear career pathways and are given the opportunity to rotate and receive training and development to support the delivery our existing and future pipeline of work.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the employee engagement survey (50% of our Heavy Lift team participated). Pleasingly your feedback indicated that we are really strong in the areas of safety, workplace behaviours, enjoyable work and values / culture. Improvement areas raised were related to rosters / flexibility, communication and remuneration. A key goal of mine is to strive for a much higher level of participation in future surveys by demonstrating that we are listening to your feedback by the actions that we take.

We have seen an increase in the number of asset incidents across the business unit in March which has prompted a reset across the business unit.  I urge you to please take time in thinking through and evaluating your tasks and communication between team members.

Over the coming months I will share with you further information regarding actions arising from the employee engagement surveys and also resource and structure changes required to support our growing business unit.

Thank you and happy Easter everyone.
