It’s the last month of the financial year and the Heavy Lift team are bringing it home strong in June. From scope expansions and early contractor involvement (ECI) engagements to shutdown finishing ahead of schedule, the team have been achieving milestones.

The 2023/24 financial year is setting up to be a big one!

West Gate Tunnel

In the Melbourne CBD, the team have been weaving their way around the city helping to bring the new West Gate bridge to life.

“We’re moving bridge parts, and as we move them from the laydown areas to their installation area, they’re being put straight into place,” said Transport Superintendent, Lindsay Marley.

“It’s really coming together now, and it’s great to see it all come to life.”

Solomon, dump truck recovery

The team at the Heavy Machine Equipment (HME) Workshop have successfully removed a differential (diff) from a WA1200 wheel loader.

As a task that is not performed often, the HME crew engaged with the Ancillary team to ensure that they considered the safest approach to the lift.

“With all in support from the workshop, a 50-tonne spreader bar was attached to the overhead gantry and an 8-meter 30 tonne soft sling was used to choke the diff, with correct weights obtained from the OEM,” said Crane Services Coordinator, Jason McKenzie.

“Once the weight had been reached, the team removed the bolts to lower to the skids below. When safely on the skids the diff was pushed out sideways to allow for the diff centre removal.

This then involved rotating the whole assembly to 90 degrees, so the centre could be removed, all the while holding the unit securely to the skids to eliminate any potential load shift while working to replace the centre.

Finally, a reversal of the procedure was undertaken to reinstall the diff unit and mount it back into position, allowing the fitters to continue commissioning the wheel loader,” finished Jason.

A great effort by the everyone involved, with True Blue awards presented by the customer in recognition.

Solomon, lift and shift of wheeled excavator

The night shift team were called in to relocate a 20-tonne wheel excavator which was broken down. After assessing the job, a 160-tonne crane and 100 tonne float were selected to provide an effective and efficient lift and shift solution.

“One of the highlights of this job was the team using the Tinny Time pillar, Checking In, while undertaking their tasks. It was evident when mobilising equipment to the job front and demobilising from the delivery point to the yard,” said Crane Services Coordinator, Luke Thompson.

“Our customer was impressed with the service we delivered and appreciated our proactive approach and commitment to taking ownership of the task.”

Eliwana, lubrication shed project

On time and without incident, the Eliwana fixed plant team supported the delivery of a lubrication shed at the Ore Processing Facility (OPF).

“The project was broken into the schedule last minute when the shed builder contractors were made available,” said Crane Services Coordinator, Mark Robson.

“Majority of the project was completed with a MAC25 Franna, while the team decided it would be safer to complete the final roof truss sections with our 250-tonne crane.

“Both Action Sheds and FMG were really happy with the input and safe works conducted by our team in completing the project safely,” finished Mark.

Kings Valley, KV23OP05

Working together with Warrikal, all hands were on deck at Kings Valley for a June shutdown.

During the shutdown, hood removals at the scrubber screening building and dry screening areas were undertaken, as well as dual crane work to rotate the bottom chute for installation, and work on the classifier 503 project was delivered.

“Nine cranes were setup and in action over the course of the shutdown [pictured below]. We finished our work scopes three days ahead of schedule which allowed us to provide even more support across the shutdown wherever it was needed,” said Project Coordinator, Sean Noyes.

“Big thanks to everyone involved, including the engineering team. A lot of planning and engineering effort went into the successful execution of our works.”

The team were awarded a True Blue for working so well together and with other contractors.

Pluto, turnaround

Assisting the Maintenance and Industrial Service’s (M&IS) team on a major turnaround at Pluto, the Heavy Lift team delivered cranes and crane operators.

“It was a challenging scope of work, but everyone came together and got what was needed to done,” said Project Superintendent, Matt Sprague.

“We’ll be back for the next major turnaround at the Karratha Gas Plant in September.”

Alevro, Pluto 2

“We finally received our first cargo for the Pluto 2 project on 23 May 2023 into the Dampier Port. The hot oil surge drum was transported out of the Port and into Pluto for set down in a staging area,” shared Alevro Project Manager, Dave Muirhead.

“This first delivery is the culmination of a lot of hard work from many across both Fagioli and Monadelphous. Well done to all involved and in particular Ben Belyea and the crew onsite, and to all those supporting the project - Recruitment, Planning, Mobilisation, Engineering, HSE, Contracts and Commercial."
